Day One
No, these are not my teeth…but I now have a set of braces just like them. Yes, as of today, I am now an adult brace face. I think I am my Orthodontist’s oldest patient. :)
They wanted to take my picture and hang it on the bulletin board along with all the other kids (and I do mean kids) photos next to the door when you walk in. I politely declined.
I am 4 Motrin IB’s in to my day. So far the suffering is under control. It is the strangest sensation. I only have them on my top teeth for the next 8 weeks to help move them enough to make room for the brackets on the bottom and then I will get the rest put on my bottom teeth. My vanity kicked in and had me opt for the clear ceramic brackets. I have a white wire too. The metal brackets are only on the far back teeth. Now if I can only figure out how to wrap my lips around them and I am so looking forward to the inside of my cheeks turning into hamburger. (How’s that for a mental picture?!) :)
So today is day 1. Only 730 more to go. :)

Hi Lisa,
Ouch! I know how tough dental work can be. But, just think how beautiful your teeth will be after the braces come off.
Hope you feel better.
hugs
Sissie
Ouch! Take your Tylenol and use that wax.
Good that you are doing something to make you feel better about yourself! That is great! I feel for you though, the thought of going to the dentist is enough to send me into a panic attack. The wax does seem to help, it did with my daughter. You will be even more beautiful when they come off. I can't wait to see that perfect smile!
Congratulations to you! My 60+ year old neighbor just completed her treatment... said it was something she had wanted to do for years and years.
Personally, I've never had them, but we just finished up with the 3rd kid's treatment. One more to go.
Best advice I can give - take advil or motrin BEFORE you go in for an adjustment, eat immediately after an adjustment (before the pain kicks in), and follow your dr's orders - not wearing the rubber bands will only prolong your treatment.
:)

Lisa, I wore braces as an adult too and I've never regretted it. I do remember the first couple of days that it was uncomfortable and a little difficult to speak properly, but that didn't last long. Down the road when you have that beautiful smile, you'll be so happy that you did!
I remember wearing braces in my youth and not doing it very well. I was a tomboy and played league basketball. The inside of my lips was consantly being severed by blows during basketballs games when an opposing teammate would slam down against me! I was also not very good about wearing the rubber bands, etc.
Poor girl....I never wore braces but understand that you can't eat sticky candy..poor girl...LOL !
Hope you feel better quick !

Oh Lisa--can't wait to see! My sister Kim just got hers off, last year. I would like to do it, but want hardwood floors, more! :D
Hi Lisa,
I feel for you. I just got mine off in May. I was just like you. I had the ceramics also. Use the wax. It won't take too long to get use to it. I hope you got some really good Kisses before you got them on. It will be a while before you get any really good kisses again.
I sitting here as I type with my clear retainers on. Looking forward to seeing your pretty smile.
Thanks for all the encouragement everyone! One minute I think I must be crazy for doing this and the next I am so happy that I am on my way. I love hearing about other adults who have done this.
Granite counter tops or braces? Looks like I won't be seeing granite until sometime after 2012!
Oh Lord! I need braces but my fear of dentist or orthodontist make it impossible for me to get any. I had to get a tooth filled and I had to have laughing gas. (Caden has braces) I would love straight teeth but at 42, never mind:)
Hope your mouth feels okay this weekend.
Oh God bless your heart. I did this not once, but twice. And I fear (oh I fear) a third in my future because my front two teeth are starting to separate. AGAIN. Even though there is a permanent retainer glued to keep them together. Motrin in your friend. And anything with lots of dried spices is not. But you will undoubtedly LOVE your new smile...which yes, in the end, does actually make it all worth it. Sort of like labor.
Good for you, Lisa!!! Of all the things I would like to change about myself that would require a hefty bill from a cosmetic surgeon - LOL!!! - one would be my smile. I've never like my smile/teeth. I always wished for a straighter,gap-free smile. The only thing I'm spending thousands for now on my mouth, unfortunately, are root canals and crowns. YUK!!!
It'll be sooo worth the discomfort, expense and self-conscientiousness once your free of metal and showing off your new, beautiful smile! :o)
It will be worth it, I'm sure! Hope it goes by quickly for you!
Yikes....can't imagine having those on my teeth for over 700 days!!...Daughter had bad braces as a kid and at 34 still has to have a wire behind her front teeth to try and keep them from seperating....I was lucky all my life to have straight teeth because I cringe when i hear the word dentist...Good luck and keep taking those Motrin!
I agree with the other commenter who suggested taking Motrin before your visit. I had them for five long years as a child, but I remember it like it was yesterday - the final results are so worth it! Hang in there!
I got my ceramic braces two days before I turned 30. Its been roughly 1 1/2 years and they're due to come off soon :D
Just found you through an interesting 'tour' of local blogs - but I think it started with Kim Williams. I'm an adult brace face, too - and this is my second time in braces. I've blogged about it just a little bit. My primary blog is mom-stuff.
