I was shopping in a second hand shop recently and couldn’t get over all of the Monkey Art. It was everywhere! And really nice oil paintings with big beautiful frames. And they were not cheap either!! $300.00 for some of these!

There must be a market for this kind of thing.
Kind of makes you wonder where they came from.
And where they are going.

It does make you wonder where the pictures were hanging before and what home they might end up in. Not my taste either but I guess there might be some love for monkeys somewhere :-)

The frames are nice. I don't care for it either. It reminds me of the ones they do like this with different dog breeds. Home Goods had those at one time and they gave kind of the same feeling as these monkeys.
Not my taste either. But when I was a kid I loved anything with monkeys!

Hahahaha...I could go ape over these! I had no idea that we had progressed past dogs playing poker and now paid good money for Mary Monkey, Queen of Scots. I'm sure the person selling this "art" believes whole-heartedly in her taste and would be uber offended if she knew they would end up as fodder on someone else's blog. So, bravo for snapping the pictures! That totally made my day!
That is so funny. My husband used to work with a woman whose husband bought into a business that really took off and they built an enormous home and had it professionally decorated through and through. One of the rooms had several pictures of monkeys riding horses in full riding gear. Apparently there is a market for this!
I have seen them many times in designer show homes. A little of it here and there is interesting....but I wouldn't buy them. To me it definitely speaks designer not real life.
This makes your wonder … what the artist 100% there when painting these monkeys? So funny!

In the design world art and textiles portraying monkeys is called Singerie. These types of paintings originally were from the French Rocco period and very popular during the early 18th century.
I actually like their fun and whimsical nature. However, a little accent piece would be enough for me.

Thanks for this info Cathy! Imagine, all this monkey art has a real name! I knew it had to come from a professionally decorated home somewhere just because they were so nicely done and framed and because the 2nd hand prices were so high. I love learning new things!
