A Walk In The Woods

Me and Crazy Dog (her name is Oakley) took a walk in the woods today. At the end of our street is a mini grave yard. It has a pretty black iron fence around it and is not very scary. The first Sherriff of Guilford County and his family are buried there. It is a small family plot and the land that is our neighborhood used to be his family’s farm land.

Are you coming?

Behind it is a trail that takes you through the woods and this time of year it is beautiful and the dog loves it.

Last week when we were walking I saw all kinds of unusual mushrooms so today I grabbed my camera as we headed out the door. Did I see any mushrooms in the woods today? No…not a single one. But I did find this beauty in the my neighbors lawn. Does that count?

There were lots of Revolutionary War Battles fought near here. One of the most famous is the Battle of Guilford Courthouse and General Greene and Cornwallis fought near here. We’ve been told that soldiers are buried in these woods. Some of their graves are marked with stones.

Does anyone know what this plant and these berries are?

It is a fun place to walk the dog and the leaves are only just now starting to change. I am still looking for the mushrooms.

I have linked this post up to Outdoor Wednesday over at A Southern Day Dreamer. Stop by to see some other Outdoor Scenes from around the country.

Oh my goodness - how funny is that? We have the same picture! I don't know what those purple berries are, but they sure are pretty, aren't they? Oakley is adorable.

What a neat walk. I grew up with an old cemetery behind our home. I also think it's wonderful that soliders are buried in the woods. It makes them hallowed since the blood was spilled in order that we might be free.

I'm assuming this is NC since you mentione Cornwallis. I had an ancestor who fought through the entire Revolution with the NC line. They were in that horrible winter at Valley Forge with Washington.

Thanks for sharing this. I think that your plant "might" be Virginia Creeper if it is attached to a vine, but I'm not sure. And we'll let the mushroom count since you found it for us!

XO,

Sheila :-)

HI Lisa!
What a wondeful trail! I love history. I would be walking with a metal detector looking for old bullets, etc. Fun! Your dog is gorgeous! The cemetary, also beautiful. That plant/bush with berries is actually called poke salad. It is a weed and will spread pretty rapidly, but it is beautiful to look at. It is poisonious though some people eat it (I hear its bitter) . One must know when to harvest to avoid the toxins, something I would avoid altogether-eating it. The berries also stain very badly. There is a GREAT song about it, by Tony Joe White called Poke Salad Annie. You must look for it on youtube or playlist, though, Makes me smile when he grunts, Umm".

The plant looks like a fern of some sort. The berries remind me of "choke cherry trees" up here.

Cool to have all that history around you. I need to come visit! Wish you still lived in TN--I'm going there the week of Thanksgiving. Do you think it will be warm? I'm hoping I can get some sun that week! :)
